There is perhaps no form of illegal activity that has captured our collective imaginations like that of organized crime. From loan sharking, to fraud schemes, to protection rackets, examples of these networks shady dealings and our fascination with the figures behind them are pervasive in popular culture. Indeed, it seems that no matter what the year, there is another tell-all mafia book, or another film or TV series inspired by real-life mob stories.

Aside from the crimes themselves, much of the mob’s notoriety comes from its brutal methods of enforcement. Whether to take down a rival member, keep their own organization in line, or simply to make a point, stories of orchestrated killings or “hits” are a fundamental part of the criminal underworld’s structure. Not to mention a major driver of the intrigue and myth around the mob.

Today we want to take a look at some of the most famous examples of mob hits in the United States. For this list, we will be looking at examples that were either widely publicized at the time, or have come to be the most well known in the years since. We will also be focusing exclusively on hits that targeted other members of criminal organizations, so that rules out people like Jimmy Hoffa who certainly worked with organized crime, but wasn’t a member of the mob in his own right.
