Though you may not have heard of the term “pseudocide” you’re almost certainly familiar with the concept. It’s the act of convincing the world that you’ve died even though you’re actually alive. In other words — faking your own death.

While there are many reasons someone might want to fake their own death, from escaping an unhappy life, to fraudulently collecting life insurance, to even playing a macabre practical joke, many of these crimes turn out to have pretty strange and surprising elements to them — whether it’s because the person has a more unusual reason for wanting to be declared dead, or more commonly, because of the way in which they are discovered to be alive.
