7 Of The Largest Drug Busts In US History
America’s relationship with drugs has always been a complicated one, to say the least.
Though there is ample disagreement between those who believe in the country’s Drug War and those who wish to see major reforms to foreign and domestic drug policy, there’s no question that there is something of a fascination with the illegal drug trade on both sides of the issue.
According to research from the RAND corporation, Americans spent roughly $120 – 145 billion dollars on illegal drugs each year between 2006-2016. And given the highly publicized and growing impact of the opioid epidemic in recent years, there’s little reason to believe that figure is trending down.
Though it’s clear that only a tiny fraction of the drugs illegally produced and imported into the country each year are found, the vast amount of resources devoted to drug crimes does occasionally result in massive drug busts for law enforcement.
Today, we wanted to take a look at some of the largest drug busts in American history. For our list we’ve opted to include a variety of different drugs, rather than simply going with the highest weight or estimated value of a bust, which would be dominated by drugs with a higher selling price. We have also limited our list to busts that actually took place in the US, so operations involving American support in other countries don’t count. It should be noted that while we have included the reported monetary value for these drug busts where available, these estimates should often be taken with a degree of skepticism. There are a variety of factors that effect these estimates, and in many cases they appear to simply be guesses on the part of media or law enforcement.
