In June of 2009, a team of police, scientists, and engineers arrived at a large open field in Santa Clara County, California. They were there as part of a cold case murder investigation, and the stakes couldn’t have been higher. This search was nearly two decades in the making, and authorities knew that this might be their last chance for a breakthrough. However, despite the critical nature of the job in front of them, it wasn’t investigators or any other person there that day who would be carrying out the search. In fact, the entire case now rested on something that wasn’t human at all.
