He Robbed A Bank To Play The Lottery…
On the night of April 14th, 2007, a man named Ren Xiaofeng sat glued to his television in the Chinese city of Handan. He was counting down the seconds to that evening’s draw for the China Sports Lottery — one of the country’s two massive state-run lotteries — which was set to take place at 8:30 pm. While there was nothing particularly special about that night’s draw to the casual observer, the situation couldn’t have been more different for Ren, whose anxiety level was at an all-time high. He knew this was his last chance for a big score — his career, his family, and yes, even his freedom depended on it.
Finally, the moment came — the air was turned on and the little plastic balls began to flutter wildly in their transparent container. One by one the winning numbers leapt out and were announced. When it was all over Ren was stunned. He had won, but his life was still over. This is the bizarre and tragic story of Ren Xiaofeng, and the insane plot that led to China’s largest-ever bank heist.
