He was counting down the seconds to that evening’s draw for the China Sports Lottery — one of the country’s two massive state-run lotteries — which was set to take place at 8:30 pm. While there was nothing particularly special about that night’s draw to the casual observer, the situation couldn’t have been more different for Ren, whose anxiety level was at an all-time high. He knew this was his last chance for a big score — his career, his family, and yes, even his freedom depended on it.
