On June 7th, 2002, officers from the York Regional Police arrived at a residence in Richmond Hill, a city just north of Toronto, Ontario. They had been called there by a lawyer representing the homeowner, who stated that his client had “material information” about an ongoing missing persons case. As police would soon learn however, the information the homeowner was referring to wasn’t any ordinary kind of tip, sighting, or obscure detail they had missed — in fact, as per an agreement between the lawyer and police, the homeowner would not be making any kind of a verbal statement at all that day. Instead, when officers entered the man’s house he led them through the foyer of his spacious suburban property and down the stairs into the finished basement. There, near a furnace room, he revealed a false wall. It concealed a chilling secret.

As truly horrific as this secret was though, it was only a glimpse of the unbelievable case to come — one which was rot with an endless onslaught of shameless tactics orchestrated by a single, unfathomable narcissist who made it his personal mission to undermine and test the Canadian justice system at every turn. This is the story of Richard “Rick” Wills — the defendant from hell.
