On a cold day Friday in December of 2014, 37 year old Allan Shyback was on a trip to Winnipeg, Manitoba with a couple of close friends and coworkers. Though it was more of a work trip than anything it was a rare bit of travel for the father of two, whose responsibilities as a single dad rarely saw him leave his house, let alone his province. He lived a full 800 miles west, in the city of Calgary, Alberta, in a home he shared with his young son and daughter.

As Allan and his friends were driving around that day he realized that he had missed a call and voicemail on his cellphone. He listened to the message, then phoned the male caller back. Though the conversation was fairly brief, within just seconds of hanging up, Allan’s friends realized that something was seriously wrong. All of the colour had drained from his face, he looked clammy and sweaty, and for a moment he even stopped breathing. In a concerned tone one of Allan’s friends asked him if he was okay — it looked like he had just seen a ghost, he said.

These words would turn out to be a fairly fitting description for what had just happened to the 37 year old. While he hadn’t literally seen a ghost, Allan feared that his past was now coming back to haunt him. Little did he know, this phone call was only the beginning.
